Muirfield begins second ballot on women members

The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers has begun a second round of voting on whether to admit female members for the first time at Muirfield. The club's first ballot was held last year but fell just short of passing, with 64 percent of members in favor of adding women when a two-thirds majority was required to enact the change. It was a result that led the R&A to remove Muirfield from the Open rota, and the club promised last year to hold a second vote on the measure."The postal ballot will be independently scrutinized and the outcome is expected to be announced in mid-March," the club said Thursday in a release. "Voting in favor of the resolution to admit women as members is recommended, unanimously, by the captain, captain nominate and the club committee of the Honourable Company."Muirfield has hosted the Open 16 times, most recently in 2013 when Phil Mickelson won. R&A chief Martin Slumbers has stated that the organization will "reconsider" Muirfield's place in the Open rota once its membership stance changes.
