The USGA announced Tuesday that the 36-hole U.S. Amateur final this summer will be played across two different courses for the first time in event history.The best amateurs in the world will head to Pinehurst in August, with the more famous No. 2 course as well as the No. 4 layout serving as the site for 36-hole stroke-play qualification. No. 2 will host the first five rounds of match play, then the two adjacent tracks will share the honors during the Aug. 18 finale.The morning round will be played on No. 4, which recently re-opened following a Gil Hanse redesign. Then the focus will return to No. 2, which has hosted three U.S. Opens and will have the honors again in 2024.This is not the first time that the USGA and Pinehurst have gotten creative. Five years ago the North Carolina resort held the U.S. Open and U.S. Women's Open in consecutive weeks on No. 2, with Martin Kaymer and Michelle Wie both lifting major trophies. This will be the third U.S. Amateur held at Pinehurst and first since 2008, when Danny Lee defeated Drew Kittleson in the final.

This year, Pinehurst No. 2 will be the first golf course to host both the men's and women's US Open Championships, over back-to-back weeks in June. The Donald Ross design has previously hosted three major championships, the 1936 PGA and the 1999 and 2005 US Open, as well as hosting the 1951 Ryder Cup and 2008 US Amateur.

The afternoon round will be played on Course No. 2, a classic Donald Ross design that was restored by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw in 2011. It will be the first time the 36-hole U.S. Amateur Championship final is contested over two courses. It will also mark the second groundbreaking collaboration between the USGA and Pinehurst in five years.

The Chicago Golf Club is the oldest 18-hole course in the United States. The course was originally only nine holes, but it was increased to 18 in 1893. The 18 holes were redesigned in 1895 and moved to a location in Wheaton, making it the second oldest 18-hole course still existing in the United States, next to Shinnecock.

The same course that the elite "Southern Amateur" was played just a few months before. The eventual CCNC Champion, Patrick Stephenson, who played in the 2017 Southern Amateur said after his round "the course played harder than it did in the summer." The course was hard and fast much like a US Open course.
