Romo shoots 81, withdraws from mini-tour event

With his PGA Tour debut fast approaching, Tony Romo's preparation suffered a setback when he withdrew from a recent mini-tour event after 27 holes.Romo teed it up this week on the North Texas PGA Players' Tour, one of 87 players in a 36-hole event with a top prize of $4,400. The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current CBS NFL analyst played as an amateur but shot an opening-round 81 that included a quintuple-bogey 10 on the second hole and a triple bogey on the fifth hole.Romo steadied the ship after his rough start, carding splits of 45-36, but withdrew after shooting 2-over 38 on the opening nine of his second round at Bridlewood Golf Club in the Dallas suburb of Flower Mound.Romo plays to a plus-0.3 handicap, and earlier this month he teamed with Tour player Will Zalatoris at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. That same week it was announced that Romo had accepted an unrestricted sponsor exemption into the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship, played March 22-25 in the Dominican Republic opposite the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. The Bridlewood event was won by former University of Texas standout Toni Hakula, who cruised to a five-shot victory after rounds of 61-67.
